Betty Mwangi MPesa chief leaving Safaricom

Betty Mwangi Safaricom’s executive in charge is set to leave Safaricom at the end of March.

Mwangi joined Safaricom in December 2007 as the head of their new products division encompassing MPesa business and GSMA community projects.

Mwangi is leaving the company after a career covering almost a decade, having piloted MPesa to a significant source of revenue for safaricom, Business Daily reported quoting an internal memo.

She was promoted to chief officer responsible for the division in October 2008, with extra duties of Safaricom’s value added services for instance ring-back service short codes, bulk SMS solutions, directory services, news alerts and Skiza. In 2012, she was appointed as the general manager of financial services and later changed to director when she took control of MPesa operations.

She will be succeeded by Brian Wamatu, presently head of MPesa product development, in an acting capacity awaiting renewed enrolment to seal the position.
