MPesa Registration can be done at any Safaricom authorized Mpesa Agent nationwide in Kenya.

For Mpesa Registration you will need your original identification document which can be your National ID or Passport. If you still use the old sim card you will also need Ksh50 to be able to replace your old sim card with a new one at the Mpesa agent before registering for Mpesa.

The advantage you get with the new type sim card is the MPESA Menu. These has a lot of handy features which are more user friendly especially when using the Mpesa Service.

You will be required to pay Ksh50 for the replacement of your old SIM card (black or light green in colour) which lacks the ‘Safaricom’ icon under the menu. If you have the new generation SIM card (deep green in colour), registration will be done immediately at no fee.

The authorized Safaricom Mpesa Agent will copy your SIM card contacts to the new SIM before completing the replacement.

MPESA REGISTRATION FOR NEW MPESA CUSTOMERS

Mpesa Registration for new mpesa customers is FREE, though you will be required to provide:

  1. Your Safaricom mobile number
  2. Your first and last name
  3. Your date of birth
  4. An original identification document e.g your national ID or passport

To register for MPESA, you will require one of the following original identification documents:

  • Kenyan National ID
  • Passport, Military ID
  • Alien ID

You will be requested to attach a copy of your ID to your registration form* if you intend to receive more than Ksh100,000 into your MPESA account per calendar year (January – December).

*copies of identification documents will be sent to Safaricom for record keeping.

ACTIVATING YOUR NEWLY REGISTERED MPESA ACCOUNT

Once you complete the first steps of your Mpesa registration, you and the Safaricom Mpesa Agent will receive an SMS confirming that the registration has been successful. Activate your MPESA menu on your account using the ‘4-digit Start Key’ sent to you by MPESA using the below steps:

  1. Go to the Safaricom Menu and select MPESA
  2. Select ‘Activate’ or ‘Wezesha’
  3. Enter the ‘Start Key’ (4-digit number that you received from MPESA)
  4. Create a new PIN (a preferred 4-digit secret number that you prefer to use as your PIN)
  5. Confirm the PIN by entering the 4-digit number again
  6. Enter your ID number (same as the one the agent entered during registration)

You will now receive a menu on your phone with a ‘Secret Word’ from MPESA; Press OK when you receive this message.

If you do not receive a Start Key upon registration or accidentally delete your Start Key SMS:

Call 234, or go to any Safaricom Retail Shop and request for a new Start Key

A new Start Key will be sent to you through SMS on your mobile number

Activate your MPESA account as per the instructions above

YOUR MPESA PIN IS SECRET

Your MPESA PIN IS SECRET and you should not share it with anyone. When choosing an MPESA PIN, choose a set of numbers that you can easily remember, but hard for others to guess.

When sending cash using Mpesa or Mpesa withdrawal, you will need your MPESA PIN on the Safaricom MPESA Menu, so keep you MPESA PIN safe with you at all times.

Do not share your MPESA PIN with anybody, not even Safaricom staff. You can change your PIN at any time from the MPESA menu on your phone. You will be charged a fee of Ksh22 each time you change your PIN.

MPESA SECRET WORD

When you activate your MPESA account, you will receive a ‘Secret Word’. This you will need when you call the Safaricom MPESA Customer support line 234. You will be required to identify yourself to the Safaircom staff by giving them the ‘Secret Word’.

Always remember NOT to share your Secret Word with anyone other than the Safaricom Customer Support Staff.

You can change your Secret Word to a word that is more memorable to you, by choosing ‘Secret Word’ under ‘My Account’ on the MPESA menu, at any time free of charge.
