Safaricom has hired former Equity Bank Group director of payments Ronald Webb to head its MPesa unit from Betty Mwangi, who left the company in March.
Mr Webb credited with transforming new payment solutions, has been active in driving the evolution of Equity Bank’s mobile money payments platform, Equitel, which he has led for the past one year.
The entry of Equitel in July last year increased the race for a share of the mobile money transfer business. Equitel currently has two million active subscribers.
Before joining Equity bank Mr Webb was the co-founder and chief architect of the Paynet and PesaPoint payment platforms in Zimbabwe and Kenya. He also has more than 30 years of experience in payments technology in Africa.
MPesa is still the top mobile money provider but the state could change as Equity works on partnering with telecoms in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo to launch Equitel in these regions.
