Safaricom has partnered with Uganda’s operator MTN the leading mobile operator in Uganda to enable Mpesa customers in Kenya send money to Uganda.
The partnership will enable a unified sending and receiving of money between Kenya and Uganda’s MTN mobile money users, a move likely to bring an end to the illegal Mpesa service in Uganda.
Safaricom’s Director of Financial Services Betty Mwangi said “This is yet another affirmation of our intention to make it possible for our individual and business customers to enjoy convenient, affordable and reliable mobile money services across the borders,”
This becomes the latest partnership after a similar deal between Vodacom of Tanzania and MTN of Rwanda earlier in the year. At present, Uganda is Kenya’s largest trading partner in the region.
Safaricom boasts of over 22 million Mpesa customers whereas Uganda’s MTN has at least 5 million users. According to the latest data from Communications authority of Kenya (CA).
